“MEDIA WARS:  A BATTLE FOR THE HEART AND THE MIND”

The conference will focus on the media, including broadcast, print, and social media. These media shape our society more than almost anything these days. How can Christians make proper use of the media? What are the dangers to individuals, families and the society?

PRESENTER: REV. BILL SHISHKO, Regional Home Missionary, New York and Southern New England

Rev. Bill Shishko, a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, is frequently heard on WXMD 89.7 FM Redeemer Broadcasting’s Proclamation program at 9 PM weekdays, and more recently on a new program on Saturdays called A Visit to the Pastor’s Study. He is the founder of Reformation New York and is also actively helping start new churches in New York and southern New England.

SESSION 1:   AMUSING OURSELVES TO DEATH (REVISITED)

In 1985 Dr. Neil Postman, Professor of Communications at New York University, fired a shot across the bows in what would soon become “The Media Wars.” In this session we’ll revisit Postman’s prophetic book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, and learn of its chilling accuracy in predicting the decline of the power of the word as a medium of communication.

SESSION 2:  THE WORD IS WORTH A THOUSAND PICTURES:  CHRIST, CHRISTIANITY, AND MEDIA

What should we learn about media as we consider the Bible, and particularly the coming of Christ into the world?   How has the Christian Church used (and abused) media over the centuries?  What lessons did the Protestant Reformation provide for us?  Put on your seat belts for a fast and fascinating ride through church history in this session.

SESSION 3:  WINNING THE WAR OF THE MEDIA WORLDS

No war is won by cursing the darkness.  Let’s light a candle for ourselves and others as we face the “Media Wars”.  This session will help you get over the sense of defeat that comes by pessimism.  By following Christ seriously (that’s what true Christianity is all about!) we’ll be in the right path in the media battle for our hearts and our minds.  We’ll learn battle strategies for ourselves, our families, our churches, and our world.   And they are strategies that always win!
